DAN IVAN

VOCALS

I’ve been singing before I can even remember. It is the gift I was given. I was singing solos in church and in grade school before I even knew what a solo was. I’ve been singing, performing, and entertaining in bands for about 55 years, going back to junior high school days. Getting into the Smack’n Rouge Band kicked off my career playing bars, clubs, colleges, festivals, and even as an opening act for country legend Don Williams. We played live on the WMMS Coffee Break Concert. We put out a single, She w/

Sally Anna, a song I co-wrote. We even created and recorded a video for “She” that we entered into the MTV Basement tapes competition. After a good twelve-year run, I moved to Georgia where I teamed up with Ken Adams and performed as a duo for three years. When I moved back to Lake County, Ohio, there were great opportunities to play with friends in bands. There was the short-lived Ivan Brothers Band. A couple different of versions of The Beat Brothers Band, then Andy’s Last Band, the Beat Bros

duo with Mitch, and then the reincarnated The Beat Brothers Band that you see today.

In addition to singing, I learned trumpet and trombone from my talented cousin Brent Gardner and played in the school bands up through high school when rock and roll took over. I was first big into The Who and The Kinks. There weren’t many acts that I didn’t like. James Brown, Chuck Berry, and Jerry Lee Lewis blew me away. Then came Johnny Winter, the James Gang, the Doobie Brothers, the Eagles, the Allman Brothers, Neil Young, and Jackson Brown.

For Beat Bros show gear I try to keep it simple; a Martin D28 acoustic, a Fender Telecaster, Hohner harmonicas, and a Mesa Boogie S.C. amp make the music come alive.

Formula 1 racing and NHL hockey are the sports I follow.

My wife, Gail and I attend as many Art shows as possible. We purchased a print by and from Tali. On it he inserted, “Be Kind… EVERYONE is Fighting a Battle you know NOTHING about.” Think about it. Remember that one.

BASS

Growing up in a musical family, my love of music started early, sparked by watching The Monkees on TV and raised in a home filled with accordion (Dad) and piano (Mom) tunes. I was really influenced early on by artists like The Kinks and David Bowie, and later by Joe Bonamassa. I developed a liking for both classic melodies and modern edge rock.

My first band, The Cousins, formed with my brother Jim and two cousins, played polkas for tips and drinks, laying the foundation for a lifelong passion for live performance. From there, I went on to perform with a wide range of groups, including Just for You (polkas), Intruder (Top 40/showband), Fear of Fashion (with Fred and Cathy Murch), The Castaways, Finding Mary, Andy’s Last Band, Stone Pony, Stratford Hill, and The Beat Brothers.

My go-to stage gear includes Yamaha and Washburn basses powered by Warwick amps to create a rich low end live sound. Offstage, I like to be creative. I enjoy spending my time on trains, puzzles, and model building.

I really enjoy holding down the low end and adding depth to a song’s groove. I like to think that I bring dedication, precision, experience, and heart to every song I play.

DRUMS

I started on drums somewhere around 9 yrs old, my first kit being a bunch of Moms coffee cans. As soon as I could reach the pedals, I began playing my dad’s and brother’s kits. Early influences were the jazz bands – with Buddy Rich and Gene Krupa records always on the turntable, and both parents playing in Dixieland jazz groups. Even with being raised on the jazz greats, Bonham, Moon and the likes soon won my full attention.

BANDS:

  • I’m not exactly sure, but I believe I’ve been in 15 bands over the years, 1983 being my performing debut drumming with Lake Effect, then with the arrival of children I shifted to a stay at home musician, where my interest in writing and recording began.
  • Still writing music, the 90’s brought a flurry of musical activity, playing in several bands and beginning the conversion of our 3-car garage into a proper recording studio.
  • The next 10-12 years hold several milestones – One started out as a fill in New Year’s Eve drumming gig with a polka band quickly evolved into a travelling wedding and concert band with a large international following. I learned the art of playing songs I’ve never heard before, sung in a language I didn’t understand. This experience helped my drumming immensely.
  • Going back to guitar I spent the next few years with Racoustic; an acoustic Rock band where I received my introduction to 3-part harmony.
  • Helping form the The Jess Marie Band was next, the opportunities and responsibilities that came as part of this group were challenging. Playing the country music of the 90’s was a new one, which pushed me on guitar and backing vocals. During this time, we opened a few shows for Ronnie Milsap and Chris Caygle. Another high point being a Bernie Kosar golf outing, first eating dinner with the Browns then later being joined onstage by Bernie’s buddy Meatloaf.
  • The middle 90’s brought me back to drums, eventually joining The Beat Brothers.
  • In this timeframe I also opened a recording studio, Fisher Music / Blue Word Records; I began work with many fine people and groups, engineering and producing records and demos for bands, solo artists, myself, and countless other projects. Part of the studio service was a backing band, The Groove Critters with
  • myself as drummer and engineer. The studio had grown to a 24-track digital recording service. We backed a variety of talented artists in the studio at this time.
  • 2017 brought the formation of what is now Word of Mouth; beginning as an acoustic duo with Liz Ford, singing harmony songs, slowly progressing into the lineup of today.
  • In June of ‘24 I sat in on drums at a friends show. It was there my passion for drumming returned and in January of ‘25 The Beat Brothers reunited and began performing again.

GEAR

With the Beat Brothers, I am proud to play Fortune Drums. This kit was hand made for me by Dale Flannigan. I can’t say enough to describe the excellence of these drums. Zildjian cymbals and Beato cases

With Word of Mouth, I go out with Boss amps and PRS, Fender and Martin guitars.

INTERESTS

I love time in nature. Spending a day in the woods, cutting or maintaining a trail, or just sitting quietly observing while slowly the world comes alive around you are one of the best pass times. My wife and I cherish time spent with family and friends, follow local bands, enjoying as many outdoor concerts as we can get to. We proudly look after the land we live on and call home.
